Breakthrough performances put forward by athletes at Southeast Asian Games - Athletics news
The Southeast Asian Games (SEA) event held at Jakabaring Sports Complex, in the capital city of Southern Sumatera, Palembang, Indonesia, was a memorable meet as Twenty National records, five Games records, and two Southeast Asian records were smashed during
the five-day span of the tournament from 12-16 November, 2011.
In the men’s category of 110 metres hurdles, defending champion, Jamras Rittidet inducted a steady pace to secure the top spot on the podium, as he finished in a time of 13.77 seconds. His finishing time was notified as the new Games record, National record
and second fastest effort in the SEA All-Time rankings.
Wan Sofian, who looked to be a tough contender for the champion, settled for second place with a lifetime best of 13.86 seconds. Robani Hassan made a decent finish with a time of 14.14 seconds for the third position.
Malaysia’s Tan Song Hwa retained her gold medal in the women’s category of Hammer Throw. She threw a magnificent 55.15 metres. Rose Herlinda Inggriana secured second spot with a throw of 51.95 metres. She was followed by Philippines’ Loralie Amahit-Sermona,
who attained the third spot with an effort of 49.69 metres. After winning the competition, Hwa stated, “I felt so relieved to get the gold medal, I may spend two months off to cure my injury.”
Men’s 100 metres category was won by Franklin Ramses Burumi in a decent time of 10.37 seconds. Gary Yeo Foo Ee, hailing from Singapore, attained the second position with a time of 10.46 seconds. He was followed by Thai athlete, Wachara Sondee, who cleared
the distance in a timeline of 10.47 seconds.
After winning the race, Burumi remarked, “I am so happy today as all my training and hard work has borne fruit. I am so proud about breaking my personal best, though I’m a bit disappointed not to break any record.”
Vietnam’s Vu Van Huyen stood par excellence, as he won an all-round event, the Decathlon. A total of staggering 7223 points were scored by the athlete. His compatriot, Nguyen Van Hue settled for second position with a total of 6830 points.
