Breanne Siwicki earns Women’s 1500m freestyle gold: Day one – Western Canadian Championships
Breanne Siwicki of MANTA earned gold medal of the Women’s 1500m freestyle in the 16 and over class on first day of the 2012 Speedo Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg, Canada on Thursday, February 16.
The 17-year-old Siwicki remained dominant over her competitors from the start. With her exceptional swim, she proved her ascendancy over her challengers and cemented her place on the victory stand for gold medal.
Siwicki devastated hopes of her competitors in the initial two rounds by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 08.88 seconds. She was followed by Tyra Rooney of CASC, who remained almost two seconds behind and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 10.10 seconds.
The same continued in subsequent rounds, where Siwicki completed 600 metres of the race by touching the wall with an effort of 6 minutes and 30.94 seconds. With her immaculate efforts, she extended her lead to nearly three seconds as her subsequent swimmer, Rooney covered the equivalent distance with an effort of 6 minutes and 33.86 seconds.
Both swimmers continued their gruelling efforts in the next rounds, but Siwicki managed to outperform her strongest competitor and ended her 1200 metres of the swim in a time of 13 minutes and 05.57 seconds. She was followed by Rooney, who was nearly nine seconds slower and submitted a time of 13 minutes and 14.39 seconds.
Siwicki made no mistake in the last three rounds of the race and secured her top finish in the event by reporting an effort of 16 minutes and 22.21 seconds. The 16-year-old Rooney stayed nearly fourteen seconds slower from her former finisher and reached the podium for silver medal by producing a time of 16 minutes and 36.98 seconds.
The silver medallist was trailed by Sherry Liu of HYACK, who was considerably slower from Rooney but stepped on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by submitting an effort of 16 minutes and 52.67 seconds.
Siwicki was very delighted with her title claiming effort in the 1500m discipline whereas the podium finishers accumulated medals for their ruthless efforts after the conclusion of the first session.
