Question:

Breast Pump Recommendations?

by  |  earlier

I have been trying to find a breast pump to add to my registry and everyone seems to have bad ratings besides the manual ones. I was hoping to get an electric because it seems so much easier. If anyone could give me a recommendation of one that is at Target or Babies R Us that would be great!

  1. I don't have any personal advice to give you....yet, but I have been doing a lot of research myself on breastpumps. Here is what I have heard. Many people believe Medela brand is the best! If you are planning on going back to work and will be pumping all the time, you need an electric pump, a manual will kill your hand. I have heard bad things about Playtex and Advent pumps. I have settled on the Medela Freestyle pump, because it is the smallest one on the market, and hands free so you don't have to hold it to yourself. It is also supposed to have the best suction of all the ones on the market. You can control the flow and suction on all Medela pumps too. You can go to medela.com to get information on all their pumps, and I'm sure Babies R Us carries them. I know that the pricing information isn't offered online, you have to call the retailer for prices.

    Hope that helped.

    Congratulations!

  2. The hospital I had my daughter at hooked me up to a Medela double dealie. I felt like a cow even though it worked really well, but it was hospital grade. You can rent them where I live, ask at your local health unit if they can tell you where to rent one. If not I also used and LOVED the Avent Isis. I still have it and all the parts and I used it for both my prior kids. I just chucked it in the dishwasher and it was great!

  3. The first time I breastfed I got a manual one and I hated it!!! The second time I breastfed...I got an electric one and it was a breeze...just hook it up and let it pump...but I had got mine from the WIC office down here and I don't really remember what the pump was in name...it was a wonderful pump though.

  4. Medela electric all the way!  Manuals take forever and they are not very effecient at all.

  5. Wow there are so many different ones out there. Yes a manual one will require constant pumping the whole time. Medela is the best brand but they are very expensive so unless you will be using it all the time for a long period of time a less expensive one will work fine. I use one that is semi manual and there is a box with a motor and you control the suction by covering and uncovering a small hole with your finger, it is very easy and you can mimic your babies sucking pattern it is called a Bailey Nurture III and it has a bag and 6 bottles and an ice pack and a spot to keep all of the bottles cold. I did not buy it as I receive WIC and they gave it to me because I work full time. If you qualify for the program this is the way to go. They also sell ones at most any store that are electric, but they are noisy, don't have very strong suction and usually you can only pump one side at a time. I did use one from Babies R US that worked okay it is made by evenflo model #35-4.5-450 I hope I helped. Good luck with the baby!

  6. If your going to pump daily, I would definitely get an electric.  I had a Medela pump in style and it was great.

If your going to be home with your baby full time until you wean, you might just want a manual.  I have the Avent Isis model and that was very nice.  I bought the manual for a vacation when I couldn't bring the big electric.  In general, I preferred the electric one though.

  7. get one from your hospital. my mom used one of those and it worked great for her

  8. They say manual is the absolute best.  You control the flow and how fast/slow you pump.  Yes you have to hand pump the whole time.  Electric ones can be painful because you can't control how and what they are doing.  And the battery ones die very fast.  The plug in ones force you to sit in one spot the whole time.  But all you can do is get one and try it.  But get a manual one also.  Try them both.

  9. Medela Pump In Style is definitely one of the best on the market.  I actually got mine from a lactation consultant, who got me a better deal than I would have paid at Babies R Us.  Check with your hospital to see if they have a lactation consultant, and if so, try to talk with her to see if she can get you a good deal on one.  I would not recommend manual, btw, as I've been told that it's a slow and not very effective process.  I solely pumped and bottle-fed the breast milk with my Medela for one year (baby would not breastfeed) and had no problems whatsoever with it.
