how long does it typically take for a mother's b*****s to stop being so engorged, and balance out to what the baby's needs are. My son is exclusively on breastmilk, and the milk came in yesterday.. today I am so engorged it hurts to breathe, walk, or even sit still. the baby eats enough to make it go down, but shortly after a meal, my b*****s are majorly swollen again, almost hard as a rock to the touch, and obviously very sore. when can I expect this to change?

  1. PUMP!!! If it's rock hard like that, you're at high risk for a breast infection. I had one! It sucks! It's very difficult taking care of a new baby when you can't even get out of bed because you're so ill. If you pump and nurse frequently your engorgement should go away within two days. Make sure you keep those b*****s empty though!

  2. Oh man I remember that feeling, it is so painful.

You may want to buy or rent a pump as a just in case matter. If for example, baby is sleeping and you get engorged, you can pump so you don't get clogged ducts. If you do get a clogged duct, you rub a warm rice pack on your breast to unclog it.
