Question:

Breastfeeding and Solid foods?

Currently my son in 5 months and is drinking breastmilk and stage 1 foods/rice cereal. I am solely pumping (unable to latch on--breastfeeding n**i's) and my milk supply is ok but sometimes I am unable to pump 7 oz every 4 hrs (i usually pump 5 every 4 hrs). At what age does he start shifting to more solid foods and less on breasmilk or less often (<4hrs)?? I would LOVE to have him drink only breastmilk but I'm worried about being able to catch up to him

  1. Why don't you try to pump every 3 hours and pump dry for at least 5 minutes to send a message to your body your need more! Your body will make it, don't worry. That is how your baby would send the message to your body. I know pumping is hard. I tried and I could not do it. I was doing everything pretty much on my own and let me tell you exculsively pumping is not for the single mom! I congratulate you on making it to 5 months.. I only made it 3 weeks. :-(

  2. Breast milk (or formula) should be the main source of nutrition for the first YEAR. There's not really a magic number of when a baby starts nursing less. It happens gradually. But at a year you can start giving whole milk. My son is almost ten months old and he's just now starting to get more interested in eating. Good for you for sticking with pumping! It's much harder than breastfeeding straight from the tap.

Have you read kellymom.com about pumping and supply?

    They have some good stuff.
