My friend wants to give me her kitten that is currently approx 3 weeks old but its still breastfeeding. How old must the kitten be before its on its own? Could it die if it leaves before finishes breastfeeding? I have a cat that's about 2 years old and I think its a male. Answers much appreciated but only if you know the REAL answer. Thanks!!!

  1. kittens are not supposed to taken from there mothers till 6 to 8 weeks old

  2. At this age it is possible to hand feed a kitten if necessary but if it is not necessary then it is just plain cruel to take it from it's mother.

Around 6 weeks is the recommended age ... it should be able to drink from a saucer on it's own first.

Also, at 3 weeks, the mother is still helping the kitten pass waste products (poo and wee) by stimulating it's stomach after each feed. If you do need to look after a kitten this young it needs to be fed proper kitten milk (not cow's milk as this will kill it) and it will need to have it's belly rubbed after each feed. Rub from the top of the belly down towards it bum gently but firmly until it does a poo

  3. The kitten should be between 6-8 weeks.  It may not die but it still will need the mother's nutrients.  Make sure when you take the kitten you don't just switch from nip to food.  Wean the baby into it.....  Good luck

  4. 8 weeks old before you can wean it

  5. Kittens should be no younger than 6 weeks and on solid kitten food (weaned.) You think you cat is a male? You might want to find out and get them fixed before taking on another animal.
