I have been breastfeeding for 3 months now and I haven't had any trouble. This week I started my menstural cycle and my right boob has not stopped itching. It mainly itches on the right side of my right boob. I have not changed detergent or done anything different. My nipples are not effected. When he nurses there is not any pain. I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

  1. Could be early mastitis. Usually it occures in the first six months of breastfeeding. It happends when you get too full and milk can leak into the breast tissue. Usually there will be a red area and it will be warm to the touch.

  2. Try putting breastmilk and/or lanolin cream on it.  :)

  3. For me I find its sometimes related to when I am having problems with yeast (vaginal yeast infection, baby with yeast diaper rash, etc).  It usually clears up if I watch my diet and take some grapefruit see extract and/or probiotics.

It also can just happen.  I get weird itches, rash, whatever.

Just treat it with something safe like calamine, baking soda, oatmeal, whatever.  If its really bothersome try topical antihistamine (caladryl, etc) and/or cortisone in SMALL amounts and keep it away from baby.

  4. it could be something as simple as a shift in hormones associated with the start of your cycle. If it subsides come the end of your cycle then there's your answer. If not... mention it to your dr. Could be a clogged milk duct as well wish will correct itself with nursing.

  5. itch it!
