my mouth my teeth my gums my throat my neck my head my eyes are killing me all because of two infected teeth... I know I sound like a baby but it is killing me!

My 6 month old is only breastfed she has never taken a bottle either.

Do you know of any pain meds like vicadin that you would take and have no problem breastfeeding

or would you or did you pump and throw the milk away and then formula feed ??

She takes a sippy cup but I have only given her water in it.

Any advice?

PS I cant get into the dr until tomorrow.

  1. Do NOT take any meds if you are breastfeeding. Call your doctor first. There is a chance the meds can travel through your body and into your breast milk. If your baby drinks the milk she could get those meds into her body and it could cause serious damage. Don't risk it. Best off calling the doctor to see what you can take that won't be damaging to your breast milk.

  2. Most narcotics are approved by the AAP for use in breastfeeding moms.  Only a very small amount gets into the milk and to the baby.  (Remember, mothers of newborns are given pain meds after birth, and can nurse their babies.)

    Here's a good link.

If it were me, I'd take pain meds and keep on nursing.

  3. You should take some ibuprofin for the inflamation. I was prescibed percocet( oxycodone) when I was released from the hosp. after having my daughter. She is still breastfeeding and just started this week taking a bottle of pumped milk.  She is five and a half months. If you have a reg. doct. call and see if they can help you with a script or if not you can always call you obgyn they can also answer any related questions and call in pain relief meds for you. Always check with your doct befor taking anything.

  4. my son was exclusively breastfed when I got an infected tooth about 18 months ago. Make sure the dentist knows that you are nursing your baby. they will prescribe an antibiotic that is safe for both of you. If they prescribe a painkiller I would try to take the smallest dose and stretch it out as long as you can between doses. expect your daughter to be a bit sleepier while you are taking pain meds. The pain should decrease after a few days of antibiotics.

  5. "Only a small amount..."

That's all it takes to affect a baby, correct?  Yes, correct.

I would take a local anaesthetic gel or something like that.  Your pain is likely much more than such a gel could affect, but for me, I'd avoid taking anything totally unnecessary when my child is directly affected as a result.  I could deal with pain until the doc can have a look and extract the teeth or whatever needs to be done.

  6. I would definitely not take anything until you can be sure. Is there a number you can call to ask? Even try going to a pharmacist. They have all the proper resources. Another thing you could do is call your dentist. They could prescribe you something over the phone. I would be sure to get the proper answer from someone fully qualified. Good luck.

  7. Call and speak with your doctor or nurse on call. If they are hard to reach I have called my local pharmacy (walgreens) and speak to the pharmacist on staff. They have so much knowledge about medication and will be able to tell you what is safe to take.

You may need antibiotics but you need a doctor for that. In any case I would keep brestfeeding but you definitely need to get yourself out of the pain.
