I am finding it it hard to keep breastfeeding because my 13 month old is very demanding. I want to breastfeed her form more than a year, but I also want her to eat meals in between breastfeeding. How do I go about doing this? Advice please?

  1. pump and put in a sippy cup.

  2. Start offering her solid foods. Just refuse to give her breastmilk until it is time to allow her again. If she gets hungry, she will try the solid foods. Bananas are a great starter food. It is also a good time to get her started on sippy cups. Whole milk and water are both good choices. She is too old for a bottle now, and the hard rubber would hurt her teeth, so go straight to the sippy cups.

You can certainly continue breast feeding while transitioning your child to solid foods.... it is the natural way!

  3. Breast milk after 1 year does not need to be the main source of nutrition for your child. Introduce her to other foods--even cow's milk is ok after 12 months. Have her sit with you at the dinner table, and offer her bites of what everyone else is eating (cut them into small pieces, and you might even make it so she can eat it with her fingers). She will probably enjoy this. Offer her a sippy cup when you don't want to nurse, so she gets adequate liquid intake. Then, schedule your nursing times when they work for you, and let her nurse only at those times.

  4. Pediatricians recommend that children starting at the age of one should begin drinking whole cows milk. There is necessary fat proteins in whole milk that children need to acquire for brain development. I would also suggest starting with solids in between milk. Children at the 6 month stage should have started on solids.
