when i'm feeding my little girl she will sometimes fall asleep half way through and doesn't get the full feed. what i was wondering was if this happens to some of you mums too. Do you do her next feed on the that same breast or do you switch over? as sometimes i think that she's not getting the "hind" milk at the back of the breast.

  1. if she falls asleep, try jiggling her a bit and encourage her to keep eating.  if she doesn't, then she's finished - put her down and relax!

i always pumped out my b*****s if my babies didn't finish them.  that way i could feed them that hind milk at the next feed (or their father could!) - also, it encouraged my b*****s to produce more and more milk.  eventually, i had pumped out and frozen enough milk that my husband and i could go away for a weekend break, and the babies didn't have to make do with formula!

be careful of letting the baby stop half-way - this might signal your b*****s that only half the milk is needed...

    good luck!

  2. This happened all the time with my daughter! I used to tickle her feet or legs to get her to stay awake. She still fell asleep but usually finished feeding first.

  3. You do the next feed on the same breast. If she finishes and wants more offer the other breast. If you feel your breast are getting to full (engorgement) latch your child there or pump little bit. Don't empty otherwise they will keep getting full.

  4. It only takes about 5 minutes to get to the hind milk, so don't worry about that.  If she is gaining weight properly, she is getting what she needs.  Try playing with her to keep her actively eating.  You didn't say how old she was, but when my son was in his first few months he did the same thing.  Switch b*****s with feedings, when she does get to the point of making it to the second breast, then you start with the one you finished with.  Now that my son is almost a year, we are back to him only getting one breast a feeding just because that is all the time is willing to put into it before wanting to go and play!
