  1. I think that while mothers are encouraged to breastfeed, they are often set up for failure.  Some examples:

    1. Breastfed babies tend to lose a bit more weight in the hospital.  Nurses who aren't used to this tend to get the mother worrying and start supplementing with formula.

    2. Lactation support is often lacking.  From ill-informed nurses who insist on a 4 hour feeding schedule (which is sure to damage your milk supply), to incorrect milk storage guidelines (thanks formula industry!), to a non-supportive workplace (inadequate maternity leave, reluctance to provide a time/place for pumping).

    3. Public attitude.  New mothers need to feed the baby every 1-2 hours, yet do not want to be house-bound.  While many states are enacting legislation protecting their right to feed their babies in public, several are lacking (including my home state of Massachusetts - what a shame!).  Also, there are relatives who come over to visit the baby, but then act like you should go into another room for every feeding.

    4. Formula companies - Free samples sound like a great idea until it's 3AM, the baby won't sleep, and you're doubting your milk supply.  It's very easy to give in to temptation when in reality, you are doing everything right.

    5. Doctors who go by growth charts derived from formula-fed babies may suggest a baby is not eating enough when it in fact is.

Really, it seems that new moms are told "You should definitely breastfeed", but then are confronted with obstacle after obstacle.  So, in effect, they are encouraged to fail.

  2. Mother's milk is the most nutritional stuff there is in the first few months of life.

the only negatives I can think of that would affect anyone other than mother and child is that if a mother returns to work, she still has to pump breast milk during the day and many jobs do not allow for that.

Other cons of breastfeeding for the mother are:

Causes fatigue to a mother already overwhelmed with a baby, as it takes a lot of energy to make breast milk. It's very time-consuming and breast milk babies tend to feed more often.

The possiblity of problems like mastitis, plugged milk ducts and engorged b*****s.

Anxiety and worry if you can't do it, for whatever reason, that you're not a "real" mother or "good mother." It's very frustrating if you can't do it right or not at all.

  3. the only negative I can think of for breastfeeding is for the mother...there are no bad effects on the baby. the mother could develop sore cracked nipples. For other people, it may make others uncomfortable....Other then that, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed. :)

  4. It hurts

  5. LOL  You're going to lose THAT debate.

Maybe you could ask a different question.  "What are the pros of bottlefeeding?"  There's got to be reason so many moms choose to bottlefeed.  Honestly, I'd like to know their reasons, too.  :-)

  6. I have no idea what you're asking here.  And why are you against breastfeeding?

  7. Please explain this a little bit better.

Do you have to give a statement that talks about how mothers are not encouraged to breastfeed?

  8. i don't really see any negative part about breast feeding except no one else can feed your child when your tried or sleepy, or not at home
