Breech/Not breech somersaulting baby?

Hi all,

My baby seems to be a little acrobat and likes turning head down then breech and back again. I know what position she's in as she gets hiccups lots and i can feel how high or low they are. She was mostly lying breech till 33 weeks, when she turned down, only to turn back again just before my 35 week appointment. Midwife referred me to hospital, but baby turned before appointment to head down. Now, at 36+2, she's turned breech again! Will have to call midwife monday for hospital referral (if she hasn't turned before then) as I know they advise the ECV (turning baby) at 37 weeks. My midwife said the ECV may not work as my baby seems to enjoy turning so may turn back again anyway.

Does anyone have any personal experience of somersaulting babies? Obviously would prefer to avoid c-section, but am also worried that I may be a little early anyway as had a show last week (though doc's not concerned about labour v soon, did warn that might mean won't go whole 40 weeks). Don't want to go into labour until she's comfy head down position. I don't know if it makes any difference, but this is my second baby, never had any problems like this first time.

Sorry, long essay. Many thanks in advance.

  1. My baby turned round all the time!

unfortunately at every appt, they said she was head down....by the time i went into labour she was breech again. the doctors obviously didnt see it, and i ended up with emergency c-section.

the only advice i can give is to prepare for a c-section, it may not happen, but she is turning so its possible!

At least you know in advance that there is a possibility of a c-section, i was totally expecting a natural birth and did well without any drugs until 6cm dilated when they found toes in my cervix!!

the doctor didnt want to risk anything so sent me for the c-section right away. i was gutted! But at least i saw my baby in the next 20mins!

The operation went absolutely fine and the healing for the 1st week was the only painful part!!

There is nothing to worry about hun..your baby will arrive safely whichever way she decides to come out :)

    best wishes x x x

  2. The Doctor SAID my baby turned around.  I was 39 weeks preganant and I went in and demanded a ultrasound because I didn't think that my son turned.  Guess what...I was right.  He was breech.  I had to have a c-section.  And it was worth it...because if the baby doesn't turn and you go into labor.... thats bad news and it can kill you or the baby.  Check with your Doctor.  Im sure they will address your concerns and make sure the baby turns on time.  If not... they c-section.  But, guess what... I think the c-section was wonderful.  No pain.  AND, my baby came out BEAUTIFUL. :)

  3. hi,

My little girl was like that....i found it so difficult to breathe with her head near my ribs!!  at 37 weeks she was still breech so they arranged a ECV for the following thursday and yep still breech!! I have got to say having an ECV was awful..I know you don't want to hear that...especially at the mo but they assured me it would just be uncomfortable but it really hurt . I felt terrified, the amount of pressure they put on my belly was unbelievable...The consultant said it probably wouldn't work and it didn't. I don't want to scare you just be prepared.  After that they arranged a c sec for the following Thursday. I really wanted a natural birth and was disappointed..but loved knowing that i was booked in...at 12 to have my baby...I felt great..i had no worries. She was just meant to be feet first...they really advise against breach babies being born vaginally but they did this for years before us (i was breach) my mum had a natural birth with me. don't be too put off by a c section...it was great my 1st experience. No pain, alert and awake. plus the mascara, hair and a little blush  made me feel good for the pics!lol and good luck like someone said it doen't matter how the baby comes as long as he/she is here safe and yep the only painful bit of c section is the coughing! i would strongly advise all the painkillers they offer you,, some women on my ward really suffered but they wouldn't take the suppository diclofenac...worth the embarrassment!

  4. Hi, your baby sounds very busy in there, i wouldn't worry about it, it will  properly move again most babies run out of room to move around soon and will settle in the correct position. but your midwife will advise you when you see her. Good luck.

  5. they didn't even try to turn my baby at nearly 36 weeks she was breech(i went to the hospital so that they could try), i had her at 36 weeks by emergency c-section because she was strangling herself with the cord.

If they were worried think you would've had a c-section by now, sounds like they think your baby will turn by herself.

    GOOD LUCK!
