Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb’s Posse retired to Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky
The Donnie K. Von Hemel trained, Caleb’s Posse, had his fair share of success in his career and, now finally bids farewell to his racing career, as he was announced retried due to an injury he incurred.
The four-year-old bay colt will stand at Kentucky in the Three Chimneys Farm, owned by Robert N. Clay.
The son of Posse notched the biggest victory of his career, when he won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on 5th November, 2011.
Under the Twin Spires, he dominated the 1 mile track and, defeated Dale Romans charge, Shackleford, in 1 minute and 34.59 seconds by a considerable margin of four lengths.
After this success, the colt did not stop and competed in three more starts, and finished as a runner-up in all three.
The last race of his career was the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park on 28th May, 2012, where he lost the victory to, Shackleford, by a marginal difference of a nose, who took his Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile revenge.
After this race, the runner sustained an injury and it was in his best interests to say goodbye to the race scene.
The colt’s owners, McNeill Stables and Cheyenne Stables LLC, issued a statement which stated:
“We discovered a non-displaced fragment in his left knee after the Met Mile.”
The statement also said:
“We were hopeful that some time off would resolve the situation, but recent radiographs have revealed that surgery to remove the chip will mean that he could not return to the racetrack this year. He has proven his brilliance on the track, and now
we want to give him a chance to pass on that brilliance in the breeding shed.”
Foaled by mare Abbey's Missy, the runner demonstrated his superior racing skills as a two-year-old, when he emerged victorious from the Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park on 6th November, 2010.
In the 19 starts that he has competed in, the Don C. McNeill bred runner has secured eight victories and seven placed finishes with earnings of $1,423,379.
