Question:

Breeding Cockatiels?

I had a male and female cockatiel together and I separated them. And now I want to give my female bird a different mate. Will she mate with the male that she hasn't been with? Or will she only mate with one male in her lifetime? The other male bird was too young and wasn't fertilizing the eggs. The other male bird is over 2 yrs old and the female is 2 also..Thanks

  1. I think she can mate with the other male because in the wild a female bird mates with different male birds every year

  2. You can go ahead and put her together with the new male.  While it probably won't make a difference, you might want to keep the male she was with out of earshot for a few days.

  3. Hello.

I have 9 breeding pair of cockateils . At the begining , sometimes one pair didn't mate with each other , and I switched their mate ...later , they did just fine ( that's why I have 9 pairs now ...lol...) Usually, you put them for a trial about 3 months , if they don't hit it off , then change them, they would not mind ...because I have one pair that don't like each other, they don't bite or anything , but the female perches on the West and the male perches on the East ...when I switched them with new mate  , now they always perch with each other and kiss and trim each other ...that's worth it . Good luck ! TM.
