If i bred my friends albino rat with my blue capped rat, would the babies all come out blue, since albino genes aren't dominant, or would some be albino?

  1. I don't think you know nearly enough as you should before breeding any kind of animal.

To start off, if you are serious and not just slapping males and females together, you should prepare yourself with correct knowledge. One of the best ways to do this is to find an already experienced rat breeder, and ask them to guide you through it. Having a mentor will definately help.

Second, if they have no pedigrees, they are literally 'unbreedable'. With pedigrees, and genetic knowledge, it would be very easy to predict the babies. With no pedigrees, it's a gamble, plain and simple. There is no sensible way of predicting anything about the babies.

This leads me onto my next concern. You do realize that colour is only one feature in rat breeding. Health and tempermant should be much greater concerns. Again, pedigrees would help you avoid unfavourable characteristics, but with nothing, you are doing risky things.

Unless you plan on breeding -quality- rats, why bother at all?

This s have some breeding and genetic info:

  2. Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die.

  3. I dont know and unlike the other ppl i am gonna be nice and try to answer your question..... I would guess most if not all would be blue because albino are rare and albino genes are completely recessive but i am not a genius!

    Hope I helped!!!

  4. You clearly don't know enough to be breeding at all.

Why are you breeding? Think about it. Breeding is not a game... it's not a matter of just putting a male and female animal together. Mess with the wrong genes and breed the wrong animals and you could end up with some very sick babies. Do you know the mom and dad's genetic/health history at least three generations back? Pet store animals should never be bred, you know nothing about their health background. It doesn't matter if they seem healthy now or the vet gave them a clean bill of health... it's what's in their genes. There are more than enough small animals in shelters and rescues without more poorly bred ones being added to the overpopulation. There's a lot more to breeding responsibly than you might think.
