Breeding birds?

Well my sister and I were going to each get a parkeet. She was going to get a male and i was going to a get a female. We thought it would be cool to let them have babies.

But when my science teachers birds eggs hatched (parkeets too) one of them was born with one leg. So we dont want that to happen. So now im getting a Cacatoo (sp) not sure how to spell it. And she is getting the parkeet.

But why do you think that one was born with only one leg? The parentes werent related so its not a problem with imbreeding.

  1. Let me just say I'm soooo proud of you for not breeding you have NO idea how hard it is. What you have down if the parents rejected the eggs? Or if the female started egg binding? (not letting the egg pass thorugh) Please leave breeding to the experts. It is NOT cool to breed for the heck of it. Oh and are you getting a cockatoo? A large white bird with a crest? No, they are expensive and you should have expersence with them before you buy them. They can live for many years so times out living there owners. Go for a cockaTIEL they are like mini cockatoos! They are even like cousins. I have a lovebird and a cockatiel. Cockatiels are very loving and laid-back. You should read some of this to be a good bird owner.

Bird's diets are 80% pellets/veggies/fruits and less then 20% seeds. An all seed diet is bad and so is an all pellet diet. Offer seeds as treats. Birds should be allowed out of there cages for at least 1-3 hours aday! To teach a bird to step up place your pointer finger near his/her stomach and rub if he/she bites do NOT pull away. It MAY hurt but you will get used to it. Birds water/food should be changed everyday. NEVER feed a bird people food like fries, bacon, alchol, or choclate. Birds should be bathed regular with lukewarm water. Just get a spray bottle and spray away! Or use a special bating spray for birds found at pet stores. Most of time birds are afraid to get baths but will soon enjoy them! Please get your bird from a breeder or adopt. Plus DON'T put your birds in the same cage same speices or NOT! you CAN let them out of the cage together if there do not fight. Birds when they get sick hide because in the wild if they showed it they would be prime targets so if your bird id sick he/she eyes will be glossy, she will not sleep with one foot, she will sit at the bottom of the cage puffed up, her leaving will be green/or runny THE BEST WAY TO TELL IF SHE IS SICK SO ALWAYS CHECK!!! If she is sick take her to a BIRD vet in your area! The only way to tell a bird from male or female is to get a blood test, (sexed)

I think I covered about everything....... good luck with your birds! =)

  2. Do lots and lots of research before getting any bird, especially a cockatoo. (correct spelling).  I think you mean a cockatiel.

Sounds like a genetic issue with one leg.  Perhaps the parents were too closely related.

You will want to buy handfed, hand raised and tame young birds and Nothing Else.

Start off Googling the species you are interested in.  Birds are expensive, loud and messy.

  3. well...why are some humans born with one leg or something? its simply a birth defect that was just naturally occuring...i think this shouldnt stop u from breeding because with one leg...i bet that one bird gets more attention, will not bite...personally...i would like a handicapped keet because they bond well also...please reconsider...
