  1. its kind of hard to breed in captivity unless you have the perfect habitat''

I have had 2 sliders for 36 yrs now plus a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old. This is how I have taken care of them for 36 yrs. Great pets.

I have had them in a stand alone 150gal pond from sears..for about 6 yrs now..

  2. Basically- don't bother.

Red-ears are bulk bred in such numbers that no one pays a lot of money for them, and it takes a lot of work to do this on the small scale.

Before we intentionally breed any animal, we want to ask a few questions:

    - Why do it? Making money is a valid answer- but do you know if you really will? Few people make money breeding turtles- the 'rule' is we breed snakes for bucks, turtles for fun.

    - What will you do with the babies? If you do it for fun, what will you do with the 10-20 babies? Can you keep them safely and well?

    - Are you ready for each phase of the process? Courting/mating, nesting, incubation, neonatal care, young care? Incubators, nesting zones, specialized infant tanks, etc.?

If the answer is still 'go for it', then get a breeding herd of about 5 turtles, keep them in a big habitat- about 300+ gallons would be good, provide a lot of sandy soil for nesting (the edge of a big outdoor pond is best).
