Brenda Castillo emerges as the best libero and best digger of 2012 Olympics – Volleyball News
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) has announced Dominican Republic’s Brenda Castillo as the best defensive expert (libero) and best digger of the Olympic Women’s Volleyball Tournament, which had an amazing run from July 28 to August 11 in
London. The cracking Olympic volleyball action took place at the Earls Court.
Castillo did a fantastic job for Dominican Republic and contributed to the overall success of her team. She had an important role of defensive expert in the team and successfully carried out her duties. She averaged 6.10 digs by set with 122 and 20 errors
in 167 attempts. Overall, she claimed an average of 9.80 and emerged as top libero of the Olympic competition. USA’s Nicole Davis also showed great consistency on the centre court and finished with average of 8.30. She claimed second spot in the category of
the best female defensive expert.
Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team started the campaign in Pool A and did well in the preliminary round-robin. Castillo alongside her other teammates enabled Dominican Republic to finish in the top-four teams of the prelims.
Dominican Republic earned the first point in the Olympic Tournament by defeating hosts Great Britain. The Head Coach of Team GB Audrey Cooper commented about the match and especially took out the name of Castillo. He stated: “I think two areas we outplayed
them: we served better, we passed better. They’re an amazing team who are on form. Their libero, Brenda Castillo, is amazing. Janine Sandell is one of our hardest hitters but Castillo still gets an arm on the ball constantly”.
In the last match of the preliminary round, Castillo put in a great effort and saved many crucial points. She was praised by her teammate Karla Echenique, who shared her views at the post-match conference. She stated: “Brenda is the best libero in the tournament,
probably the best in the world. All the time she comes in the top three in competitions, she has natural skills.”
Dominican Republic avoided disqualification in the first round and paved its way to the quarterfinals. However, Dominican Republic could not advance from the quarterfinals and ended up in sixth position.
