Brendan Jones misses Australian Open by single stroke!
Brendan Jones was the runner-up to this season’s Australian Open. The organizers and the crowd said that this year’s event has seen one of the most dramatic and closest finishes in the history of the Open at The Lakes.
Jones missed the top prize by an agonizing single stroke, having had worked laudably hard to maintain top form throughout the tournament, despite gale-force winds.
Play had been suspended for three hours and the return saw Peter Senior climb up the ladder, take Jones’ position as clubhouse leader, and become the oldest winner to ever lift the Stonehaven Cup!
The loss by the smallest of margins was a complete upset for Jones. A single shot more (blame the double-bogeys earlier this week) and he may as well have had his first major Australian tournament. Way to start the year indeed.
''I played well enough to win it, definitely,” he said. “I've made three double bogeys this week and a lot of bogeys and still finished three-under. It's hard to take right now, but I'm sure after a few beers tonight I'll feel pretty good about it''.
Nonetheless, he did have some words of praise for veteran Peter Senior. He called him a veteran player, a champion of Australian golf, taking note of how he stole the show with a superb 4-under 284 high-power performance.
If, you are going to lose, it had better be to the most seasoned player in Australian golf, Jones said he admitted. To quote:
''If you're going to get beat by someone, you want to get beat by a champion of Australian golf. As disappointed as I am not to win, I'm going to look back and be very proud of my performance''.
Jones may slap himself about for losing the tournament, but truth be told, his play was just as exhilarating, especially considering Matt Millar’s ultimate lapse.
Millar began the day paired with Jones but fell to the 23rd place because he did not have the grit to control the game in the adverse conditions blowing on Sunday.
Brendan Jones now hopes to turn his energies to the Australian PGA at Coolum, which is set to tee off in a week’s time.
