Brendan Jones to boycott 2016 Olympics
After numerous debates and arguments, golf was finally included in the Olympics after 1904. Golf was very much part of the 1900 and 1904 Olympics but it never featured again, until it was decided that it will be a part of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Brendan Jones has decided that he will boycott the 2016 Olympics. He simply feels that golf is not an Olympic sport.
Although there has been support from the players to include golf in the Olympics but, in general, this idea has not been welcomed by many circles. However, Phil Mickelson is one of those who feel that golf deserves a place in the Olympics.
Jones feels that the Olympic medal will not make the players very proud because week in week out, they are playing million dollars events.
Golf is not the only sport which has come under criticism for being in the Olympics. Tennis has also been under the gun. Both, tennis and golf have their own grand slams and major’s respectively, so Olympic medals are not a priority for the players.
“I do not agree that golf should be in the Olympics,” Jones said, “It is like the tennis, who even knows who won the gold medal in the tennis?”
Jones initially planned to retire from the sport at the age of 40, but now, having a young family, he is thinking to continue playing for the next five years at least.
Jones feels that he lost the love for the game at the time when he chose it as a profession. Jones has made it clear the he will neither be playing at the Olympics nor he will be playing on the senior tour.
“I think I am going to have to play for a little bit longer, but if I can get another good five years out of the game the way the last five years have been then I’ll be very, very happy with that,” he said. “There is no way in the world I will be playing
seniors golf I can tell you that right now”.
Currently, Jones is busy preparing for the British Open. He will leave on Saturday for England to take the field at the Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Course. The third major of the year will tee off next Thursday.
