Brendan Morrison shines as Calgary Flames overtake Carolina Hurricanes 7-6 -NHL Update
Calgary’s veteran centre player, Brendan Morrison, shone brightly by picking up four points (2 goals, 2 assists) to lift the Flames to victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in a high scoring matchup, 7-6, on Tuesday night, December 6, 2011, at the Scotiabank
Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
With forward, Curtis Glencross, out of the scene at the moment due to a flu, Calgary was counting on Morrison to take charge by putting him in the starting line-up in place.
"Sometimes these things happen," Morrison said. "It's tough that Glennie was out, but when you get your number called you want to show the guys you're ready. I've put in the work here over the past however long it has been. I haven't played a whole lot of
games here the last little while. I wanted to be sharp and keep it simple and make the right plays."
The Flames came out strong in the opening period as captain, Jarome Iginla potted his eighth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season in the initial three minutes followed by Lee Stempniak to extend the lead at the 18:51 mark.
Morrison followed up with their third straight goal in the opening 42 seconds while Carolina countered back with two straight as Jiri Tlusty and Tim Brent added two of their own to comeback in the matchup.
Rene Bourque made the ice breaker and killed off the Carolina momentum on a breakaway assisted with less than six minutes remaining in the second while Morrison got his second of the night 1:22 into the third and final period of regulation.
Carolina tried hard to comeback in the last 20 minutes with Tuomo Ruutu giving the Hurricanes their third, but as Calgary kept on answering back with Mikael Backlund for their sixth at the midway mark on a power play opportunity, the visitors had a tough
time keeping the Flames out of their net.
Eric Staal got a breakaway chance of his own and capitalised to bring Carolina within two of the score, but Iginla’s second of the night proved crucial at the 18:51 mark as Carolina potted two more less than 30 seconds apart to comeback but fell short by
one in the end.
