Brendan Steele fails to defend his title at the Valero Texas Open – Golf News
Brendan Steele failed to defend his title at the Valero Texas Open, despite showing an outstanding performance in the final round on Sunday, April 22, 2012.
Last year, he triumphed in the event with a one-stroke lead, defeating rivals, Kevin Chappell and Charley Hoffman.
Steele carded a bogey-free five-under par 67 to end his campaign that saw him falter in the opening two rounds of the tournament.
He was on the verge of missing the cut at the Oaks Course at San Antonio, following a three-over score for the first 36 holes.
However, the bad weather conditions helped him remain in the tournament, as the cut line moved from one-over to four over on Friday afternoon.
Therefore, he was provided with another opportunity to prove his mettle in the event. For that purpose, he managed a three-under par score in the third round to level the par and took the clubhouse lead in the final round after scoring 67.
Yet, it was not enough to successfully defend his title in the event that saw Ben Curtis play his best since his last victory in 2006.
Curtis scored a nine-under par tournament score to end a six-year title drought on the PGA Tour, leaving Steele four strokes behind on the leaderboard.
Steele was tied for the fourth position along with three other players, Bob Estes, Brian g*y and Charlie Wi at five-under par 283.
Despite the fact that he failed to defend his title, he looked pleased with his comeback in the game, especially after a poor start.
According to him, he was not enjoying his best form in the past few months. Therefore, recording a tied for the fourth position will give him a big boost in the upcoming events on the PGA Tour.
It was his best finish of the 2012 PGA Tour season, as he was tied for 5th in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the next event on the PGA Tour. However, Steele will not participate in the event, as he preferred to take some rest, following a tiring schedule in the first quarter of the year.
