Brendon McCullum laments over-keen approach after T20 defeat to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129 lamented his side’s over-keen approach after they suffered an overwhelming defeat in the opening T20I against South Africa, played at Durban last night.
In his first match in charge since taking over from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849, McCullum was left to ponder over the differences between the two sides, despite both camps naming relatively inexperienced playing XIs.
The tourists handed debuts to four players, while South Africa also followed suit by having three newcomers in the starting line-up. However, it was the home side which came up trumps, thumping their opponents by an impressive 8-wicket margin.
McCullum won the toss, but soon realized that team had an uphill task to overcome after they were reduced to 36 for 6. The first four batters, which included http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RJ-Nicol-c2331 and the skipper himself, failed to reach double figures, and by the end, four more had joined them.
Colin Munro and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Doug-Bracewell-c1394 saved them from utter embarrassment by recording 23 and 21* respectively, but the final total of 86 always seemed inadequate.
South Africa started poorly after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Quinton-de-Kock-c82885, who scored 28 not out, as victory was completed in 12. 1 overs.
McCullum was disappointed with his team performances and said that they paid the price for showing too much aggression at the start.
"We obviously wanted to be aggressive today, and we wanted to put South Africa under pressure right from the get-go, but we learned a lot about earning the right to do so first," McCullum said after the game. "Ensure that you http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Roger-Kirshaw-Pierson-c42135 to your fundamentals, and first and foremost give yourselves that opportunity to be able to be aggressive. I think one thing we'll definitely take out of this game is that we were just a little over-keen to try and put some pressure on South Africa from the outset. "
The Kiwis will have a chance to make amends when they meet South Africa in the second T20, played at East London on December 23.
