There was nip and tuck competition between McCullum and Taylor for the position after Vettori stepped down following their exit in the semi-final stage of the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) World Cup 2011.
However, to his disappointment, McCullum missed out on the captaincy role as Taylor was appointed.
"Obviously I was disappointed to miss out on something that I desperately wanted but ultimately you've got to move on and I do wish Ross all the best and I definitely support him along that journey,” said the opener.

"I had my opportunity to present my case and to show what I thought was the way forward for New Zealand Cricket and ultimately they decided to go another route and you can't argue with that," added McCullum.

The wicketkeeper batsman also said that he has been quite disappointed after being overlooked for the captaincy, and went through a range of different emotions, but he took 24 hours to come out to of this frustration and realised that he still has enough
opportunities to contribute to his national side.
McCullum revealed that he has always been enthusiastic to play for his country, adding that New Zealand cricket is his priority and he is looking forward to serve his team for next four five years.

The newly appointed skipper asserted that he is looking forward to McCullum making a comeback as the top-scorer, playing at the top-order.
