Brendon de Jonge gets into position at the AT&T National
Brendon de Jonge carded a two-under par 69 in the second round of the AT&T National, to share the second spot at the Congressional Country Club, on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Jonge managed to sink a total of three birdie putts against a lone bogey to settle two-strokes behind the leader, Hunter Mahan.
He stated that the course played really tough on the second day and it seemed as if it was designed for the US Open.
“I didn't drive the ball great but was lucky enough to draw a couple good lies in the rough and able to get it around the green, and I made some nice par saves, which you're going to have to on a golf course this difficult,” he said.
“You figure you're going to putt a lot of six and eight footers for par. It's like playing a U.S. Open”.
According to him, his putting has improved over the last few days. That is the main reason why he succeeded in saving the par several times during the tournament so far.
“I've seen a few more putts go in, which is obviously nice, and breeds a little bit of confidence,” he said. “I've always been like that. I've kind of been a streaky putter, and hopefully it's a long streak”.
Jonge has played a total of 19 PGA Tour events so far in the 2012 golf season and managed to make the cut 16 times. He is among the busiest players who try to participate in each of the events on the tour.
However, his track record is not as impressive as it should have been. He only has two top-10 finishes registered under his name in the current season.
Therefore, he now plans to improve his record on the tour with a strong finish in the remaining two rounds at Congressional, as he did in the last week’s Travelers Championship, to tie for the eighth position.
Jimmy Walker and Robert Garrigus are the other two players who joined him later on the leaderboard, after carding a two-under par and four-under par score, respectively.
