Brennan Boesch: Prince Fielder deal can pay dividends for Detroit Tigers – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ outfielder Brennan Boesch stated the he knew Dave Dombrowski had plans to a sign a deal with Prince Fielder. Dombrowski made the move after Tigers’ designated hitter went down due to a serious knee injury. Martinez, who was absolutely brilliant last season, is expected to miss the entire next season, leaving a vacant spot in Tigers’ batting line-up.
“Everyone knew Mr. Ilitch and Mr. Dombrowski were going to make a move when Victor went down,” outfielder Brennan Boesch said in a phone interview with the Associated Press. “But I don’t think anybody thought it would be this big.”
“I don’t think there’s a better right-left combo (than Fielder and Cabrera) in any lineup in baseball. I’m sure Skip’s wheels are already turning on how to set them up,” he further added.
Fielder will be expected to replace Martinez and bat at number five slot behind Miguel Cabrera. Both players are equally dangerous and they could form one of the most exciting hitting pair in Major League Baseball. With a $214 million contract, Fielder is one of the most expensive players in the game right now. However, according to a leading sports website, the Tigers are still waiting for Fielder’s physical before confirming the deal.
Boesch further added that nobody thought the deal will be that big. Mike Ilitch, Tigers’ owner has a reputation of spending his money lavishly and he has given another example of that by agreeing to a $214 million deal.
With so many batting options, Jim Leyland will have a difficult job of choosing the right combination this season. With Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder at number four and number five slots, the Tigers will be looking to post huge scores on the board this season.
Prince’s father, Cecil Fielder is also very excited at his son's signing with the Tigers. Batting with a great .299 average, with 120 RBI’s and 38 home runs, Fielder made the most of available opportunities last season. He will be looking to post his career best stats in 2012 with his favourite club. The Tigers, on the other hand, will be hoping for a decent return on their huge investment.
