Brennan Boesch could DH for Detroit Tigers after Victor Martinez goes out – MLB News
Brennan Boesch could be asked to perform the DH (designated hitter) duties after Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday that Victor Martinez is likely miss the entire next season due to a knee injury. Martinez produced sensational performances during 2011 season. Along with Miguel Cabrera, he formed one of the strongest batting pairs in Major League Baseball.
However, the striker suffered from a torn ACL while participating in a routine training session and he is expected to be out of the team until the end of 2012 season. Martinez’s absence provides an excellent opportunity to Brennan Boesch, who could get a call to bat behind Cabrera at number five slot.
Boesch displayed some high quality hitting skills two seasons ago, finishing second to Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton in the AL Most Valuable Player race. Batting with an impressive .342 average with 12 home runs and 49 RBI’s, he had a strong start to his rookie season. However, he managed to hit just .163 with 2 home runs and 18 RBI’s after the All Star break.
"I'll do whatever Skipper wants, obviously, but that spot is definitely a different spot to hit in with Miguel being the hitter that he is," Boesch said. "I think it's almost an honour to be put there so if my name is called, I'll be up for the challenge and I'll embrace that. It would be great. Skipper, he changes a lot of lineups, he does some different things. I don't really get caught up where I'm gonna hit.”
Martinez is a key member of the Tigers’ side and his team mates enjoy playing with him. Boesch said he was behind Martinez in these tough times and he will be praying for him to get well soon.
"I just feel bad for Victor. He's an amazing teammate. I really enjoyed playing with him and having his son around was fun,” Boesch further added.
The left handed striker, Boesch has a great love for the game. He enjoys every minute on the field. The guy didn’t participate in the playoffs last season. Looking to secure a permanent spot in Tigers’ batting line-up, he will be eager to go out there and face live pitching this season.
