Brennan Boesch helps Detroit Tigers beat New York Yankees 6-3 in third-straight game - MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers’ Brennan Boesch had a remarkable day with the bat, as he smashed a homer and drove in three runs to help the club beat the New York Yankees 6-3 for the third straight time at Comerica Park on Thursday, May 5.
It was an obvious relief for the Tigers as they have lost seven straight outings before achieving these three of four-game series.
"Hopefully it gives us some more confidence playing a team like the Yankees and beating them three out of four," Boesch said. "I think we're going to play with some momentum and some more passion and get some wins on the road."
The Tigers’ starter, Rick Porcello gave two runs on eight hits, walked two and took out three batters over seven innings. He gave two runs in the fourth inning that might have given the Yankees’ strong batting line-up a real boost, but Porcello bounced back
and restricted them to just these runs.
After losing two-straight series, the much needed three-straight victories achieved against the Yankees has given the Tigers a real boost, said Porcello after the game.
After giving an early single, the Yankees’ starter, Allan Jones Burnett struck back strongly and did not yield any run in his next five innings. The Yankees were leading 2-1 in the sixth when Ramon Santiago drove in a single and stole second base. Boesch
then hit towards centre-field for a two-out single up the middle tying the game 2-2.
In the seventh inning, Burnett lost control over his pitches and gave away three runs. The Tigers’ Victor Martinez singled then Magglio Ordonez walked and Brandon Inge hit a sacrifice for a 3-2 lead. Don Kelly then hit towards short-stop Eduardo Nunez, who
had a throwing error allowing Ordonez and Ryan Raburn to score two runs.
"I feel comfortable fielding the ball, but I've made some bad throws," Nunez said through a translator. "I have to keep working on that."
Boesch hitting a solo homer of the game took the lead to 6-2. Last year Boesch was having a .342 batting average with 12 homers and he had another nice start this season, hitting .318.
"It was pretty much a blur last year," Boesch said. "I feel like I'm having better at-bats even now, so we'll see where it takes me."
The Yankees’ Brett Gardner hit a third run for the team in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Yankees’ Derek Jeter was given some rest due to last night’s hip problem. Alex Rodriguez was also supposed to have a rest, but made a rare pinch-running appearance in the middle of the game. Eric Chavez played at third base position in place of Rodriguez.
