Brennan Boesch recovers from a thumb injury, could be a DH option for Detroit Tigers – MLB News
A few days ago, the Tigers announced that Victor Martinez, their designated hitter, will be missing the entire 2012 season due to a knee injury he picked while taking in a routine training session. The incident took place in early august and Martinez hasn’t returned to the club since then.
Batting with an impressive .330 average with more than 100 RBI’s, he let the Tigers win the American League Central division title. The Tigers will be looking to get his replacement as early as possible as they still have to sign a lot of players before the spring training season starts next month.
With Martinez out of the team for the entire season, Brennan Boesch is expected to get a call to bat behind Cabrera. In his rookie year, he batted with an incredible .342 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs before the All Star Break.
"I've been hitting on my own in California," said Boesch, who's from the Los Angeles area. "Everything feels good -- really good. It feels really strong."
"Every year this time is fun," Boesch said. "But more than ever this year, I'm more excited because I wasn't able to participate in the playoffs. I haven't played baseball in longer than I've gone since I can remember. Before the offseason it was September since I'd hit, faced live pitching. “
However, just before the playoffs last year, Boesch suffered from a serious thumb injury which forced him out of the game. Now when he’s healed, he will be looking to cheer up his fans with strong and consistent performances.
"I feel 100%," he said Thursday.
"The surgery couldn't have gone better," he said, "and I'm just excited to play again."
Boesch has the chance to bat behind Miguel Cabrera previously, when Cabrera finished second to Josh Hamilton in the American League Most Valuable Player voting. Undoubtedly, he is more mature and experienced than he was ever before. With an entire season to prove his metal, the left handed striker will be looking to make the most of available opportunities this season to secure a permanent spot in Tigers’ roster.
