Brennan Boesch shines as Detroit Tigers defeat Texas Rangers 6-5 – MLB Update
Brennan Boesch hit a solo home run in the eighth inning on Tuesday, August 2 to guide the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Texas Rangers at Comerica Park.
Detroit Tigers got an ideal start in the three-game series.
In a night where rain was coming down in buckets, the eighth inning feat of Boesch completely transformed the game. Boesch’s homer came against Mike Adams who was probably not expecting it at the crucial stage of the game.
"I had no idea who he was," Boesch said. "No disrespect to him, but he's not in our league and he just got traded over here. In the minor leagues, it seemed like I played in rain all the time in Erie and Toledo, for a little bit. You just have to focus that
little bit more."
But Boesch was not completely satisfied with the results that came his team’s way. He was expecting something bigger in the first of three-game series.
"We probably could have had a way bigger lead with the way we were swinging the bats, getting hits, but we just weren't driving in runs," Boesch said. "You don't want that to come down to it like it did, but it worked out for me and the team, so I'm happy."
Tuesday’s game kicked off with Wilson Betemit’s second inning run that drove in against Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers. The lead was well defended by Max Scherzer, being on the mound as Detroit’s starter.
Victor Martinez followed in the third inning with his single to left that doubled the Tigers lead against the Texas Rangers as Lewis found it increasingly difficult to contain the Tigers hitters. But Nelson Cruz hit an RBI single in the fourth to bring the
Rangers lead down to 2-1.
Alex Avila homered in the fourth to take the lead to 3-1 in the 2-hit one-run fourth inning of Colby Lewis. Yorvit Torrealba was quick to come up with a single in the fifth, making it 3-2. The game saw its big hit coming off Alex Avila’s bat – which gave
him a two-run homer.
The 5-2 lead was supposed to be sufficient enough for the Tigers, as it apparently was until the eighth inning where the lead was intact. Nelson Cruz drove in another run and Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer against Joaquin Benoit to level the score as the
eighth inning ended.
It was in the eighth inning that Brennan Boesch’s surprising homer not only proved to be tiebreaking but also decisive for the team. Jose Valverde tossed a shut-out ninth as the Detroit Tigers packed the game with a 6-5 victory against the disappointed Texas
Rangers.
