Brent Hayden and Lotte Friis shine in Berlin: 2011 FINA World Cup
Canada’s Brent Hayden and Denmark’s Lotte Friis performed up to expectations of their fans on day one of the seven stop 2011 FINA World Cup series in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday, October 22. The session of the competition held the Men’s 100m and Women’s
800m freestyle events.
Brent Hayden of Canada beat his rivals, Stefan Nystrand of Sweden and Matthew Abood of Australia by hitting the finishing wall in a mouth shattering time of 47.06 seconds to win the Men’s 100m freestyle crown. Meanwhile, Nystrand earned silver title in a
time of 47.23 seconds and Abood claimed bronze medal in a time of 47.39 seconds.
Pieter Timmers of Belgium and Steffen Deibler of Germany finished fourth with a matching time of 47.90 seconds, while Tiago Venancio of Portugal settled for sixth place in a time of 47.99 seconds. Filippo Magnini of Italy earned seventh place honours by
posting a time of 48.00 seconds, whereas, Andrii Govorov of Ukraine settled for eighth position in 48.88 seconds.
On the other hand, the Women’s 800m freestyle title was taken over by Denmark’s Lotte Friis in a record breaking time of 8 minutes and 16.99 seconds. Friis was the gold medallist in 1500m freestyle at the 2011 World Championships edition, in Shanghai. In
addition, she claimed two gold medals in 800m and 1500m freestyle races at the 2009 European Championships, in Budapest. In the meantime, Elena Sokolova of Russia powered the finishing wall in a time of 8 minutes and 21.91 seconds to claim silver medal. Additionally,
the bronze medal was captured by Colombia’s Sarah Kohler in a time of 8 minutes and 25.88 seconds.
Jessica Thielmann of Great Britain performed well in the respective meet and settled for fourth spot in a mark of 8 minutes and 27.90 seconds. The fifth place went to Isabelle Harle of Colombia in a time of 8 minutes and 33.24 seconds, whereas, Camille Muffat
of France settled for sixth position in a mark of 8 minutes and 36.64 seconds.
In the meantime, Melanie Radicke of Colombia earned seventh place honours by hitting the finishing wall with a matchless mark of 8 minutes and 39.31 seconds. In addition, Cecilie Johannessen of Norway picked eighth spot in a time of 8 minutes and 39.68 seconds.
Finland’s Laura Lajunen went through ninth position by posting a time of 8 minutes and 47.39 seconds, while Patricia Aschan of Finland settled for tenth place in a time of 8 minutes and 47.50 seconds.
This fourth meet of the seven stop 2011 FINA World Cup series is an important event for several swimming nations as it is helping their swimmers to prepare hard for their upcoming challenges which include the 2012 London Olympics.
