Brent Hayden confirms his spot in the Canadian Swimming Team for World Championships – Swimming News
Swimming Canada’s fastest freestyle sprinter, Brent Matthew Hayden, has won the Men’s 100m freestyle at the Canada Swimming National Championships, to book his spot for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in July.
The winners of every event at these championships will collectively make-up the Canada Swimming Team to compete at these World Championships.
After three years, Hayden has the opportunity to regain his world title for the 100m freestyle event at the World Championships, as the Canadian earned his only gold medal in the same event at the 2007 World Long Course Championships in Melbourne.
In 2010, the 27-year-old conquered two individual gold medals in the 50m and the 100m freestyle categories at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Hayden clocked a wonderful 48.83 seconds to claim the title for the 100m freestyle, that placed him well ahead of the Oakville’s Colin Russell and Pointe-Claire’s Dominique Massie Martel, who touched the wall in a time of 49.73 and 50.45 seconds, respectively.
The former world champion was delighted with his win and expressed his desire to conquer the gold medal once again at the World Championships in July.
In the Women’s 100m breast-stroke, Calgary’s Jillian Tyler produced her personal best with a timing of 1:07.56 minutes to reach the top of the podium. She finished ahead of the Medicine Hat’s Tianna Rissling, who touched the wall in a time of 1:07.90 minutes
and booked her spot for the Canada Team to Shanghai. Tyler seemed happy with her performance and said that she had a goal to finish her swim in 1:08.00 minutes.
In the Women’s 100m freestyle, Julia Wilkinson conquered the title for the event in a time of 54.93 seconds. Wilkinson just managed to beat Montreal’s Victoria Poon, who touched the finishing wall in a time of 55.11 seconds. Both swimmers confirmed their
spots for China.
In the Women’s 400m Individual Medley, the top two finishers were Alexa Komarnycky and Stephanie Horner, who also confirmed their spots for the Championships.
On the Men’s side, Andrew Ford successfully booked his spot for Shanghai after winning the 400m IM and expressed his happiness to be a part of Canada Swimming team.
