Brent Hayden conquers Men’s 100m freestyle heats - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Brent Hayden of VAND conquered the qualification rounds of Men’s 100m freestyle on fourth day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Friday, March 30.
The 28-year-old Hayden smothered hopes of his challengers by cruising his way into the final round as top contender for gold medal. His effort remained remarkably ahead of his following swimmer, Richard Hortness of LAC, and he faced no difficulty in proving
his eligibility for the top qualification spot of the race.
Hayden stunned the aquatic crowd by finishing his swim in an impressive time of 48.68 seconds to qualify as the finest swimmer. His effort remained 0.59 seconds faster from his subsequent competitor, Hortness, who emerged on the finishing wall as second
best swimmer and qualified into the final by clocking a time of 49.27 seconds.
The third spot of the event was obtained by Colin Russell of BWSC, who stayed just 0.10 seconds slower from qualifying as the second best swimmer and ended third by reporting a time of 49.37 seconds.
Russell was chased by Thomas Gossland of VAND, who stayed 0.77 seconds behind his foregoing swimmer and made his way into the final round as fourth position holder with an effort of 50.14 seconds.
He was followed by Luke Peddie of OSC, who earned fifth position of the discipline by hitting the wall with the timing of 50.16 seconds. His effort remained 0.23 seconds ahead of Dominique Massie-Martel of PCSC, who proved his mettle for sixth position by
producing a time of 50.39 seconds.
Subsequently, Kyle Troskot of LASC secured seventh best qualification spot of the race as he stayed 0.09 seconds slower from Massie-Martel and ended his swim in a time of 50.48 seconds. Similarly, Troskot was chased by Geoffrey Cheah of HKG, who stayed just
0.04 seconds slower from his former finisher and concluded his race in a time of 50.52 seconds.
The session ended after the conclusion of all planned events whereas these swimmers will face each other in the final round of the 100m discipline, where the top two finishers will confirm their place in the Canadian team to the 2012 London Olympics.
