Brent Morel giving Chicago White Sox signs of maturity in role of third baseman
Spring Training is all about powering up the squad for the upcoming Major League Baseball season. 2011 is presumably the year Chicago White Sox will make it through to the playoffs.
Their $123 million budget is designed to support that ambition and many supporters are backing the club in their campaign for glory. One man is turning up the heat in the Cactus league this season and it happens to be Brent Morel.
Young rookie, Morel, is looking to make his mark on the management this time around as he’s doing very well in the Cactus League games. Greg walker is working with the rookie at third base and he’s seeing a lot of difference in his mindset, leading up to
the coming season.
Brent is improving his hitting and he’s taking an advanced step in his offensive strategy.
However, with that said and established, Walker believes there is more at work here. He believes Morel’s mentality is what could end him up the first choice team in Chicago.
Walker spoke highly of Morel, who managed two hits on Wednesday’s 7-6 loss against the Cincinnati Reds in the Cactus League game. Brent made a good impression on the veterans as he also piled on a base steal in the game.
"He's a real even-tempered kid, and I really like that about him", said Walker of Morel. "He doesn't get down or real up. He just goes about his business, and that sort of attitude holds up well in Chicago".
"Over the years of breaking in young players in Chicago, you find it's very difficult for an emotional kid. It's a difficult market to play in. Expectations are extremely high. [Morel's] mindset holds up better than most under the circumstances".
Morels’ record from 2010 suggests that he’s an average player but if his mentality improves, there will be no doubt in seeing him play third base regularly.
Last year, Brent carried a batting average of .231. He smashed three home runs and drove in 7 runs for the club. In total, Morel featured in 21 games for the White Sox.
