Brent Morel powers Chicago White Sox to 8-1 victory over Cleveland Indians – MLB Update
Brent Morel smashed two home-runs and Paul Konerko unleashed a Grand Slam to guide the Chicago White Sox to an inspiring 8-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, September 8 and subsequently deny the
Indians a chance for booking a berth for the postseason.
The Indians slipped below the .500 winning percentage for the first time this season after a late assault by the White Sox denied them a victory in what was a well-poised game till the top of the seventh inning.
Cleveland took an early lead in the first inning when Jim Thome drove in a single to left field, allowing Asdrubal Cabrera to complete his run. Thome went 2-for-4 in the game to improve his batting average to .238 for the season but his performance alone
was not sufficient to counter the might of Chicago. Cabrera finished 2-for-3 in the game with a run to his credit but what seemed to be missing for the Indians was team-work. The Indians had been relying on Shelley Duncan for runs but he too miserably failed
in this game, going 0-for-3.
White Sox were kept quiet by David Huff till the third inning before Morel unleashed his arms for a 429-feet home-run down centre-field to square the score at 1-1 and revive the contest. The game remained in the balance till the seventh inning before Morel
came to bat again and replicated his third-inning feat to give the home team a crucial three-run advantage over the Indians. Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios completed their runs off Morel’s hit to impose pressure on the visitors. Morel went 2-for-4 in the game
and drove in four runs to prove his worth in Chicago’s line-up.
Before the Indians could pose a reply, Konerko came at-bat with bases loaded and pulled the ball towards the favoured left flank to joyfully run around the bases and complete a slam to take the home-side to an unassailable seven-run lead.
Matt Thornton pitched a perfect spell at the depth for Chicago to win his first game of the season with four losses already to his credit this season so far.
