Brent Sutter not to return as coach of Calgary Flames next season -NHL Update
Looks like Calgary has already begun the process of rebuilding their team after a disappointing 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as Flames announced that Brent Sutter would not be returning as head coach of the club for the upcoming
hockey year.
Surprisingly, the long time relationship between the two did not end in a harsh way but rather in a mature and with mutual understanding as Calgary general manager, Jay Feaster, and Brent Sutter held long discussions and came up with this.
"It's not an easy day," Feaster said. "It's beyond just the fact that we're both on the page that we need youth and enthusiasm and all those things. The one thing I want to make clear is this is not about fault or blame or finger pointing."
Sutter’s contract was coming to an end, which was by the end of June, but getting things done before that was better than getting taken care of later.
"After discussions with Jay since the season ended, it was in the best interest of the organization and myself to part ways," Sutter said. "I wish the Calgary Flames all the best."
Sutter has been a great coach for Calgary, without a doubt, but since things were not going the way the franchise had hoped for the past two seasons, Flames were bound to make some changes.
"Brent and I explored many options and ultimately determined that it is best to proceed in different directions," Feaster added. "Brent is a great person and an excellent hockey coach."
Unluckily, Sutter had a bad track record going into the meeting as his team missed three straight playoffs in the years he had been the coach. Blaming Sutter would not do any good and Feaster knew that going in, which is why, ending it on mutual terms turned
out to be better for both stakeholders.
Brent Sutter was brought on by Darryl Sutter
, who was the GM back in 2009 and is now head coach of the Los Angeles Kings. Sutter will definitely not be on the market for long as many teams would pay for a talented coach like that.
