Brentford knocks out Everton in the Carling Cup
Brentford of League One knocked out Premier League Everton in the third round of the Carling Cup last night. The match finished 1-1 and Brentford won the tie 4-3 on penalties.
Everton took the lead in the sixth minute when Seamus Coleman scored a well taken goal. Ayegbeni Yakubu should have increased Everton’s lead, but the Nigerian missed the target after being allowed a free header in the box. Everton looked to be dominating
and were in complete control during the early stages of the match.
After the first 20 minutes Brentford began to settle and had their own good spell of football. Myles Weston caused the Everton defence some serious difficulties with his pace, and it was his cross that Gary Alexander scored from. Alexander connected with
Weston’s well delivered ball and powered a header into the Everton goal.
Brentford was awarded a penalty in the second half after Coleman fouled Weston. The home side should have extended their lead, but Charlie McDonald’s shot was saved by Jan Mucha in the Everton goal.
The Brentford keeper Richard Lee was in inspired form and denied Everton on a number of occasions. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s header was well saved by the keeper and Marouane Fellaini saw his header cleared of the line. Everton manager David Moyes brought on
Steven Pienaar and Mikel Arteta as he attempted to take the game to Brentford.
The match finished 1-1 at full time and both sides had chances to win and progress into the next round. The game continued to be lively in extra time but neither side could find the breakthrough and the game went to penalties.
Jermaine Beckford and Phil Jagielka were the unlucky Everton players who missed their penalties. McDonald scored his penalty this time for Brentford and put the home side 4-3 up in the shootout. Jagielka struck the post when he needed to score with Everton’s
last penalty kick. His miss sparked wild celebrations as the fans invaded the pitch.
Afterwards, Moyes conceded that he was concerned with Everton’s poor start to the season. Moyes and his team were booed off the pitch in their last Premiership game at home to Newcastle after they lost 1-0. Everton has only managed two league draws and are
in 19th place after five games.
The Everton manager will expect to be under serious pressure if he cannot turn things around at the club very quickly. This defeat will only compound Moyes’ problems.
