Brenton Rickard excels in Men’s 200m breaststroke heats – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Brenton Rickard of Southport Olympic Swimming Club excelled in the preliminary rounds of Men’s 200m breaststroke on fourth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Sunday, March
18.
The Australian Championships acts as the Selection Trials, where the top two finishers of every event will secure their spots in the national team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 28-year-old Rickard stayed considerably ahead of his challengers throughout the four-lap discipline. With his epic start, he sprinted his way towards the finishing end by touching the wall in a time of 30.11 seconds.
He enjoyed an advantage of 0.89 seconds over Craig Calder of Albury, who followed Rickard on the other end of the pool as second best swimmer with the timing of 31.00 seconds.
Rickard strengthened his position for top finish in the second lap, where he geared up his efforts and concluded his first half of the race by producing an effort of 1 minute and 03.95 seconds. His dazzling effort placed him in a lead of 1.38 seconds over
Calder, who ended his first half by posting 1 minute and 05.33 seconds.
Rickard continued his meticulous efforts in the third lap, where he submitted a time of 1 minute and 38.83 seconds to secure his position. With his impeccable effort, he enjoyed a lead of 1.39 seconds over 25-year-old Calder, who covered his 150 metres of
the race by reporting a time of 1 minute and 40.22 seconds.
Subsequently, Rickard made his way to the finishing blockade in a time of 2 minutes and 15.08 seconds. He was trailed by Calder, who remained 1.29 seconds slower from overpowering Rickard’s effort and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 16.37
seconds.
The second best finisher remained 0.60 seconds ahead of Jeremy Meyer of Traralgon, who posted a time of 2 minutes and 16.97 seconds for third position.
In addition, these contestants will participate against each other in the next round of 200m discipline, where the top eight finishers will qualify for the playoff.
