Brett Cecil loses duel with Jeremy Guthrie but does well on the mound for Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays lost their first game of the series against the Baltimore Orioles 0-2 at Rogers Centre, Toronto on Friday, September 9.
Brett Cecil accomplished something he was sent to the mound to do. The Blue Jays lost the game against a veteran pitcher, Jeremy Guthrie, but the fault did not sit with Cecil.
The Toronto hurler accomplished his mission as he managed to pitch five scoreless innings before Kelly Johnson committed a throwing error in the sixth to allow J. J. Hardy on to second base. After that it was just one bad decision from Cecil that led to
the first run of the game. The ace striker pitched the ball to Vladimir Guerrero in the strike zone. That was the only mistake of the night.
Orioles’ designated hitter, Guerrero managed to hit the ball for a RBI single to left-field and that brought the O’s to a 1-0 score line.
Ryan Adams then recorded the first and only run against Cecil in the game as he cleared the home plate off Nick Markakis’ ground out.
Cecil managed to pitch 7.2 innings, conceding just one run and seven hits. He picked up nine strike-outs and the team was more than pleased with his display on the mound.
"I'd like to think that was a little better than the Texas game," Cecil said. "Just as far as mechanics-wise. This game I felt like my mechanics were there. Staying back over the rubber as long as I could and just driving forward."
O’s manager, Buck Showalter, was also full of praise for the star. He had a few words of encouragement to pass on to the hurler.
"He was really good," Showalter said "The key to being in that ballgame is the pitching job our guy did to try and match up with him, because you're not going to beat him unless you get a similar outing from your guy."
Cecil is currently 4-9 and the management is pleased to see him come back to form again after having a terrific 2010 season.
