Brett Drewitt shatters the course record to grab second round lead at the Golf South Australian Amateur Classic
Brett Drewitt recorded a new course record of seven-under, 64 to grab the lead in the second round of Golf South Australian Amateur Classic at the Glenelg Golf Club. Sean Underwood, Geoff Drakeford and Ryan Peake are tied for the second spot with their scores
of two-under, trailing the leader by two shots.
“It was one of those rounds where everything went right,” said Drewitt, who’s ranked just outside the world’s Top-50. “I drove the ball well and that gave me opportunities to attach the flags. The putts that I had were mostly insider five meters which enabled
me to be aggressive with the putter.”
The 20-year-old Drewitt is one of the most promising players on the Australian Amateur circuit. Ranked 51st in the Amateur rankings, Drewitt was the only Australian who won an international title at the 109th Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship
at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia. He overtook the American Cory Renfrew in the Match Play with a decisive score of 4&3.
Drewitt is also the defending champion at the Queensland Amateur Classic being played adjacent to this tournament at Birbie Island. Drewitt decided to participate in the SA Amateur instead of defending his title at QLD Amateur. The young golfer is coming
out of an impressive season after his top 15 finish at the Master of the Amateurs, top ten finish at the Lake Macquarie and a top 16 finish at the NSW Amateur Championship.
“I’m swinging the club the best that I have for a while,” Drewitt said. “I’ll focus upon each shot at a time. That’s all I can do, forget about yesterday’s course record round, stay in the moment and try to post another low number.”
Drewitt’s new course record at Glenelg surpasses the previous record of 65 made by Brad Moules in the last year’s Classic. Drewitt is now four shots ahead of overnight leaders Daniel Bringolf and Brad Moules.
The halfway cut was enforced at eight-over and  37 players made through including Matt Stieger with five-over, Nathan Holman with four-over, along with Michael Williams and Kalem Richardson with one-under Par.
