Brett Drewitt wins the Golf South Australian Amateur Classic
Brett Drewitt’s decision of letting go of his title defense at the Queensland Amateur Classic and joining the field at the Golf South Australian Amateur at Glenelg Golf Club in Adelaide, proved just the right one as he soared to the top of the leaderboard
on the final day. Drewitt won the SA Amateur with an even par score in the final round and an aggregate score of seven-under. He cleared the nearest contender, Daniel Bringolf, with four shots.
The 20-year-old Drewitt is a promising player on the Australian Amateur circuit and was ranked 51st in the Amateur Rankings before his win at SA Amateur Classic. His overall composure throughout the four days remained steady with his rounds of
70-64-72-71 were well constructed.
“Today, I certainly played differently over the closing holes than what happened at Riversdale. I kept my score going when both Daniel and Brad [Moules] made mistakes on sixteen. That was the turning point for me on the sixteenth towards winning this title.”
Drewitt has entered the final round with a six shot lead which he owed mostly to his stellar performance in the second round when he levelled the course record with his seven-under, 64. Bringolf and Rory Burke were the two competitors who constantly challenged
Drewitt’s lead and carded impressive rounds of two-under, 69. They were also among the only four players for the day who were able to break par. Drewitt’s victory was a much deserved one not to mention long due as he finished in the top 15 at the Master of
Amateurs, top ten in Lake Macquarie, and a top 16 finish at the NSW Amateur Championship.
Drewitt was the only player who won an international title for the country at the 109th Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia. He also won the 2010 Queensland Amateur, both of which were Match Play
tournaments. Drewitt has not won a Stroke Play title and was happy to get the monkey off his back.
“It was great to finally get a stroke win under my belt,” remarked Drewitt, “I was a little nervous coming down the final stretch as Daniel [Bringolf] was scoring well. I’ve been close this summer at the Tasmanian Open and at Riversdale, so it was important
to seal this win.”
With this win, Drewitt has now climbed to the top 40th in World Amateur Rankings, and the timely surge will go a long way in his upcoming challenges in the US and UK. The young Aussie will be heading to the US in the first week of next month and
the solid finish at the SA Amateur Classic will serve as the much needed booster shot to his confidence.
