Brett Favre Recovering, may Play Next Week against Bears
Brett Favre’s legendary career may not be at an end after all.
Although the Minnesota Vikings are no longer in the running for the playoffs, they still need a quarterback for the final three games of the season.
Interim head Coach, Leslie Frazier says that Favre would be his first pick for quarterback and that the 41 year old may be back in time for Monday Night Football next week against the division leading Chicago Bears.
According to Frazier, Favre was feeling a little better on Tuesday, one day after his consecutive streak record ended, with him on the sidelines against the New York Giants.
Favre strained the sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder against the Buffalo Bills, when Arthur Moats blindsided him and brought him to the ground. While watching the game against the Giants on Monday, Favre’s hand was
as purple as the home jersey that he wears and, most likely, will be wearing it again before the season is over.
Frazier also said that the medical staff performed an ultrasound on Favre’s shoulder and neck, showing that there is no nerve damage done.
As for now, Favre’s season, and maybe even his career, will not end by being placed on injured reserve.
"I don't see that as being part of the equation at this point," Frazier said. "It looks like there's a chance that we're going to be able to get him back at some point. Hopefully this week."
Frazier is actually expecting Favre to come back against the Bears, rather than Tarvaris Jackson, who started against the Giants.
Jackson came out of the game with an injury twice. The second injury was a turf toe problem, which puts his status for this week’s game as questionable. Jackson had to lean heavily on a railing to get up the steps to the locker
room at the end of the game.
"That's a difficult injury, particularly when you're a skill-position guy like he is," Frazier said. "So we'll see what happens with that."
The Vikings’ last option is Joe Webb. Webb was supposed to be a wide receiver, but was then assigned to quarterback. Although he has great talent, it is dwarfed by the fact that he is inexperienced and young.
The Vikes were also looking into about eight free agents for extra depth in their last three games.
"Just trying to determine which guy best fits us at this stage," Frazier said. "Because it's probably going to be a guy who may very well find himself playing in that Monday night ball game."
However, Frazier would prefer Favre or Jackson to play before considering Webb and other free agents. Only time will tell and, hopefully, Favre will be able to complete, what he says, is his final season.
The Vikes will play the Bears on Monday December 20th at the Mall of America Field.
Stay tuned!
