Brett Favre admits to confusion, may have to dial it back
Brett Favre's season has not started the way he pictured. The fact that it's a surprise that a 40-year-old who didn't go to training camp is struggling is a testament to Favre's amazing success last year.
That success has not carried into this season, where Favre has already thrown more interceptions at home than he did all of last season.
"I don't want to raise red flags," Favre said Thursday. "We gotta get on the same page, because we're 0-2. We gotta find a way to get this thing going. I gotta make better decisions. I gotta play better."
Favre's struggles have not been helped by the absence of his number-one target from last year, Sidney Rice, who will be out for at least another month after having surgery shortly before the season.
Things have not been going the Vikings' way so far; they've lost twice and have never looked cohesive on offence. Those struggles have led to Favre reverting to his gun-slinging ways, forcing passes that aren't there.
"I've got to err a little more with caution on some of these decisions," Favre said. "And history has shown with me that when we're struggling a little bit, I try to press the issue and try to make something happen. I think that's what's made me the quarterback
I am and has benefited me throughout my career. But it's also hurt me. It's hard to be patient and try to get this puzzle pieced together."
Favre has admitted that he is struggling to keep up, having missed out on the pre season.
Favre said Thursday that he's still "not really sure who I'm throwing to on particular plays" and admitted that "If I sat here and told you that I knew exactly what we're doing right now, I'd be lying."
All these things could see the Vikings scale back Favre's responsibilities in the offence. They do have the luxury of an elite back in Adrien Peterson to hand off to, allowing Favre to get back into the flow slowly. For now the Vikings just need to find a way
to win.
"Right now, we're kind of grasping at straws trying to figure out things," Favre said. "I think we, me included, can get on the same page even better."
