Brett Favre and Leslie Frazier discuss simplifying Minnesota Vikings' playbook
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre and former head coach Brad Childress often disagreed over how to run the team's offence, but since the latter was fired, interim head coach Leslie Frazier is welcoming the 41-year-old quarterback's input, and Favre
is suggesting a less-is-more approach.
"Every playbook across this league is way too thick," Favre told reporters recently.
"You never practice it all. How can you become consistent if you're running a different play every week out of a different formation with a different motion with different guys?"
Favre has lacked a reliable target at receiver as Bernard Berrian has been injured and Sidney Rice has been out much of the season. Randy Moss came in for only a few games before he was shipped off to the Tennessee Titans.
The Vikings have lacked consistency at the wide receiver position this season and Favre seems to believe that this factor, coupled with Childress' overly complicated offence, has made life difficult for the Vikings and is why they are 3-7 at the moment.
"You think those guys crack that book, go through all 500 pages? Come on," Favre went on to say. "You could hide a couple hundred dollar bills in there."
On the other end of the spectrum there's Frazier who, as an assistant coach at Indianapolis saw firsthand just how effective an offence run largely by a veteran quarterback (Peyton Manning) can be.
As a result, Frazier has welcomed Favre's input. "He's a Hall of Fame quarterback. He's seen just about every defensive front and coverage that you can see, so his input will be invaluable," Frazier said.
"But at the same time, there are going to be some ideas and some thoughts that may not necessarily be a part of what we do, and he'll understand that."
How it all comes together for the Vikings remains to be seen, but the league will be watching to see how they attempt to turn things around when they take on the Washington Redskins on Sunday 28 November.
