Brett Favre changes mind comes back to Minnesota
In what was the least surprising move of the off-season, Brett Favre has reportedly said he will come out of retirement and come back to play for the Minnesota Vikings.
Just weeks after announcing he would retire from the NFL – for what seemed like the umpteenth time – Favre, according to reports, told teammates Steve Hutchinson, Jared Allen and Ryan Longwell he would come back for one more year.
Longwell told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, Favre told the three he would return for one last shot next year.
"We simply went down there to get an answer and after talking for a while, his answer was 'yes’. He loves the guys in the locker room and is doing it for all of us,” Longwell told Nichols.
The three players travelled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi – Favre’s home – via private jet to convince/get answers from the three-time league MVP. They got the answer they wanted and took the 40-year-old back to Minnesota with them, where they arrived to a media frenzy.
While driving from the airport to the Vikings’ headquarters the players were chased by three local television helicopters and upon arrival were cheered by fans who had waited for the veteran to arrive. Favre even waved to the fans and media.
"He didn't know we were coming. We just asked if he had one more year. Not about wins or losses, but just for the guys in the locker room to have a blast for a year,” Longwell told Nichols.
Favre will complete the last year of his $25million two-year contract he signed with the Vikings in 2009. Playing for Minnesota last season, Favre had one of his best years as a pro. He posted his highest pass completion percentage at over 68%, he threw for the least amount of interceptions in his career with seven whilst throwing 33 touchdowns. He also had the highest quarterback rating of his career at 107.2 and threw over 4000 yards for the sixth time in his career.
The Vikings have yet to officially announce Favre’s return but have scheduled a news conference with head coach Brad Childress on Wednesday and said "media availability with QB Brett Favre is to be determined."
