Brett Favre could miss game due to ankle fractures
Brett Favre's ongoing consecutive games played streak is being threatened once again.
After a seemingly endless list of injuries, personal tragedies and retirement speculation, the 41-year-old has been on the field for the opening offensive series for his team a record 291 times ( 315 games if the play-offs are included).
What's putting Favre's consecutive games played streak to the test this time around is an injury to Favre's left ankle.
The results of an MRI that Favre received on Monday, 25 October, revealed that the Vikings' quarterback had a stress fracture in his foot, as well as fracture in his heel bone.
"He's got great pain threshold and also great competitive zeal," Vikings head coach Brad Childress said.
While allegations of Favre's involvement with a New York Jets employee (which may violate the league's personal conduct policy) continue to hover over Favre, the biggest stumbling block for Favre at the moment will be trying to be fit enough to compete in
Minnesota's next game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. The decision as to whether or not Favre plays will be in the hands of coach Childress.
"He's got to be able to do all the things that his position does. You can't put a guy that's a sitting duck out there. His competitive nature, I'm sure, will come into it. But a lot of times you've got to protect people from themselves.
"We have to do what is right for the Minnesota Vikings. That's what I get charged with at the end of the day. I'm not worried about someone getting one more start or one more yard to equal 300."
Favre appeared to be interested in putting the needs of the team ahead of his own personal ambitions when he said, "If I can play but not be effective, then it's not worth playing. I hope I use good judgment, so we'll see. I'm no spring chicken anymore.
I don't heal as quickly."
