Brett Favre has undecided status for Sunday’s game versus Giants
Brett Favre is still not throwing well in practice, but the Minnesota Vikings are still hopeful that Favre will be able to extend his NFL consecutive start record on Sunday against the New York Giants.
Favre barely practiced on Friday, which was his first practice all week. He made a few light throws to work out the strained sternoclavicular joint on his throwing shoulder. He is still listed as questionable and he will decide about playing before his,
hopefully, 298th successive regular season game.
Interim head coach Leslie Frazier says that Favre wanted to see if he could throw more than anything on Friday and that he will have to show the rest of the team his throwing stamina during their pregame workout on Sunday in order to play.
"We would have to see him make some of the throws he'd have to make in the game, and he understands that," Frazier said. "So, we'll take a look on Sunday morning and see."
Favre said earlier this week that he does not want to compromise the Vikings’ chances to beat the Giants in order to extend his streak, no matter how much the streak means to him.
Frazier also says that the only way that Favre will play is if he is able to play the entire game, protect himself, and make all of the throws. Just giving him one or two plays to start the game just to extend his streak is not an option. The team has not
ruled out giving Favre a painkilling injection to get him through the game.
Percy Harvin is also listed as doubtful with migraines over the past week. The receiver has not attended any practices at the team’s facility this week as well as last Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.
"It's going to be touch-and-go," Frazier said. "We're going to talk again [Friday]. But it's going to be very, very difficult to get him up to speed. But we'll see."
Defensive end Ray Edwards is questionable with a sprained right ankle, along with third string quarterback Joe Webb with a hamstring injury and left guard Steve Hutchinson with a broken right thumb. Safety Tyrell Johnson and cornerback Chris Cook are both
out with knee injuries.
Favre was injured in the third play of the first offensive series against the Bills last week. Buffalo’s linebacker, Arthur Moats crushed him on that play, resulting in Favre watching the rest of the game from the sidelines after undergoing x-rays.
"The type of guy he is, the only [way he's not] on the field is if the sky's falling," Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said.
If Favre cannot make it, Tarvaris Jackson will start against the Giants on Sunday December 12 at Mall of America Field.
