Brett Favre plans to retire

According to sources close with the situation, Brett Favre has told the Minnesota Vikings he will not return to the team for what would have been his 20th season as a professional.

According to ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Favre has sent text messages to his teammates saying “This is it.”

If this really ‘is it’ then it will be Favre’s third retirement; the quarterback also retired after 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and a season with the New York Jets in 2008. Further to the reports, it is understood that the 40-year-old has told the Vikings his ankle, which he had surgery on, hasn’t responded as well as he hoped and as a result decided not to come back and see out the two-year contract he signed with the Vikings in 2009.

Favre threw for over 4,200 yards and 33 touchdowns last season, whilst throwing a career low seven interceptions. Favre helped the Vikings to a 12-4 record last year, helping the team reach the NFC North title game where they lost to eventual Super Bowl champions the New Orleans Saints.
