Brett Favre to re-evaluate his future
A little less than a year after leading his team to the NFC Championship game, Brett Favre and his Minnesota Vikings (3-7) appear all but done this season, potentially the play-caller’s last. Following yet another defeat on Sunday 21 November, a 31-3 dismantling
at the hands of the Green Bay Packers, the veteran quarterback alluded to re-evaluating his plans for the near future a number of times.
“I would never have expected to be in this situation,” Favre said to reporters following Sunday’s loss to his former squad. “Mathematically I think there is still some hope. I hate to use Jim Mora’s comments about playoffs. I can’t even think about that. I
know there is still a slim chance, but come on. We’ve got to play a lot better than we played today and last week.”
Favre, whose NFL career has spanned 20 years, contemplated retirement this past off-season. However, he decided to return to the Vikings in the hopes that he could build off a stellar campaign last season, in which Minnesota finished with a combined record
of 13-5 and fell just one win short of reaching the Super Bowl.
“I came back for a Super Bowl, you’re right,” Favre said in response to an inquiry about the way this season has panned out. “Also [there is] a chance that that doesn’t happen, probably a better chance that we don’t. And there’s a way better chance that you
won’t play as well as last year. But this is a little surprising. Again, I’m just going to go home and, I don’t want to say ‘think’ about this game. Just re-evaluate tomorrow.”
Still, when asked about his future, Favre maintained that he’s committed to the team, for better or worse. “I’m here, and we’re in this thing together,” he said.
The deteriorating relationship between Favre and his head coach, Brad Childress, had also been a major storyline for the Vikings this season, as Childress was often critical of his QB’s performance. It remains to be seen what will become of Favre, but on Monday
22 November, the embattled coach was fired.
