Brett Fielding grabs Boys 5km gold: Day three – 2012 Australian Open Water Championships
Lawley’s Brett Fielding met expectations of his fans by grabbing gold medal of the 5km swim in Boys 14 Year Olds category on closing day of the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships on Sunday, February 19.
The 14-year-old Fielding was the top favourite swimmer of the crowd to conquer gold medal of the event as previously, he earned gold medal of the 10km discipline in his age group on second day of the tournament.
With his nerve-wrecking form, he gave no chance to his competitors to fight back and dominated the event. He completed his swim in a wonderful time of 1 hour, 01 minutes and 20.99 seconds for top spot of the event. His fascinating effort placed him almost
four seconds ahead of Lachlan May, who posted a time of 1 hour, 01 minute and 24.76 seconds for the second position.
Surrey Park’s May was chased by Oliver Pye of IPSWICH Grammar, who was almost two minutes slower from the silver medallist but occupied third fastest spot with an effort of 1 hour, 03 minutes and 41.04 seconds.
Moments later, the audience enjoyed thrilling efforts of Woden’s Lachlan Colquhoun, who dominated the same event in Boys 15 Year Olds group. The 15-year-old Colquhoun paved his way on top of the medal rostrum for gold medal by producing an effort of 59 minutes
and 36.40 seconds.
With his irresistible efforts throughout the 5km discipline, he remained 1.44 seconds ahead of Clovercrest’s Ethan Owens, who climbed the victory stand for silver medal by finishing his swim in a time of 59 minutes and 37.84 seconds.
The 15-year-old Owens faced tough competition from Thomas Wood of Surrey Park. Wood remained just 0.08 seconds behind his foregoing challenger and transpired on the finishing end with an effort of 59 minutes and 37.92 seconds for bronze medal.
Mitchell Littler of Bond Swimming Club and Austin Whayman of St Peters Wester remained fourth and fifth position holders of the event as they ended their swims with timings of 59:39.81 and 59:40.40 minutes respectively.
Fielding was excited after his title claiming effort while the championship concluded after its final session.
